Józef Franczak joined the Polish Army at the age of 17. After graduating from the Podoficerska School at the Gendarmeria Training Centre in Grudziądz, he was assigned to the Gendarmeria Plutone in Plain. At first, he was in Gdynia, Łódź, and then returned to Gdynia, where he was going to go to the West, but just before his planned departure he resigned from it..
