In the latest Times Higher Education planet University Rankings 2026, covering 2191 colleges from 115 countries, China made crucial progress: as many as 5 Chinese universities were in the top forty, compared to 3 in 2025.
The best positions were:
- Tsinghua University (12.),
- Beijing University (13.),
- Fudan University and Zhejiang University (commonly 36.),
- Shanghai Jiao Tong University (40.).
A full of 97 Chinese universities were ranked, which confirms China's consolidation as a global investigation centre. The THE study highlights the highly dynamic improvement of investigation in China – faster than in another scientifically advanced countries – and advanced results in key areas specified as engineering, computer discipline and science.
The ranking is based on 5 indicators: teaching quality, investigation environment, citations, internationalization and cooperation with industry, with bibliometric data with Scopus and surveys among scientists.
For comparison, Poland represents 45 universities, the best of which – the Medical University in Wrocław and the Jagiellonian University – scope from 501 to 600. Further universities, including the University of Warsaw (601-801) or the University of Szczeciński (1500+), stay far behind the planet leader – despite the presence of Polish scientists at the highest level, which raises questions about systemic barriers to the improvement of Polish academic institutions.
Interestingly, Tsinghua University is ranked 1st in the U.S. Best Global Universities for Computer discipline ranking, ahead of Beijing University, Zhejiang University, and Shanghai Jiao Tong University, which were included in the top 5 top rated universities of the planet dealing with computer science.
