New! MiGa-29 pilot from Malbork suspended for harm to buildings

On Thursday morning, June 2024, a major incidental involving the MiG-29 aircraft occurred in Malborski County. During the school flight, the pilot exceeded the sound velocity at about 1,000 feet, resulting in a shock wave that damaged the roofs of respective buildings close the village of Szaleniec.

The Armed Forces General Command (DGRSZ) issued an authoritative message confirming that the incidental occurred around 10 a.m.

"The impact of the sound wave caused harm to roof coverings in respective buildings" – it transmitted DGRSZ via social media.

The Military Police Office in Malbork and the Air Aviation Accident Investigation Commission were immediately sent to the site of the incident, which carry out further investigations to analyse the circumstances of the incident.

Reactions and consequences

The Polish Armed Forces assured that they would cover all costs of repairing damaged buildings, adding the utmost care to reconstruct the condition before the incident.

The village’s chieftain, Sylwia Dudek, reported to ZET Radio: “At my place the windows came out, the wall broke. People have holes in the roof.” Fortunately, no 1 was injured.

Next steps. Pilot suspended

On Friday, RMF FM station reported that the MiGa-29 pilot had been suspended until the event had been explained. At the same time, the fighter that caused the harm was temporarily grounded. A thorough inspection of the aeroplane is planned to check that the pilot's manoeuvre could have been the consequence of incorrect indications of the on-board apparatus.
