For respective days now, the Basilica of San Lorenzo in Lucina in central Rome has been experiencing a real siege. Hundreds of residents and tourists come to see a fresco on which, after fresh maintenance, the angel has a face strikingly akin to... the Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.The resemblance, seen in the painting depicting the angel over King Humbert II's sculpture, caused a political storm. The issue was publicised by the paper “La Repubblica”, and the centre-left opposition demanded a consequence from the Minister of Culture. On his instructions, he intervened in the Roman office of surveillance of monuments.
After the first inspection, it was announced that if changes to the fresco were introduced without consent, the first image should be restored. The 2000 painting's documentary search continues.
Maintenance work was essential due to wall moisture. The artist himself, who is liable for the frescoes, assures that he did not represent the Prime Minister. She besides referred to the substance herself: “No, I definitely don’t look like an angel”, Meloni wrote on social media.
