A visit by Syrian president Ahmad asz-Sarah to Moscow did not aid Russian president Vladimir Putin to regulate the future of Russian military bases in the country.
Despite the Russian proposal for friendship, the Syrian authorities intend to revise all the agreements previously concluded with Moscow.
Ahmad asz-Szar besides raised the question of the destiny of erstwhile Syrian president Bashar al-Assad, who fled to Russia in December 2024 and requested political asylum. According to Syrian media, Ash-Shar demands his extradition. He besides wants economical concessions from Russia, including grain supply on preferential terms and compensation for war losses.
Russia has expressed its willingness to participate in the reconstruction of the damaged Syrian infrastructure.
Under the 2017 Asad Agreements Moscow rented 2 military facilities in Syria for 49 years: an air base in Humajmi and a naval base in Tartus. Thanks to the latter, she had direct access to the Mediterranean Sea.
