Genocide in Gaza is easier to end than war in Ukraine

There are 2 points on the map of the planet in which there will be no silence: east Ukraine and Gaza Strip. Although both places divide thousands of kilometres and different historical contexts, 1 is hopelessly linked by war. And yet, paradoxically, the conflict in Gaza ends faster than the war in Ukraine. Why?

The war in the Gaza Strip can be compared to the periodic discharge of tensions in a place where besides many groups, interests and ideologies clash in besides small space. Israel, Hamas, muslim Jihad, Egypt, Iran, United States — each of these players has its goals, but no can afford a full war. As shortly as the number of civilian casualties exceeds the Western social vulnerability threshold, diplomatic dance begins: mediation, truces, prisoner exchange, restoration promises. And although in practice it only means a break before another circular of violence, in the logic of this conflict it is adequate – due to the fact that everyone wants it not to get out of control.

Ukraine is something completely different. It's not a war for boundaries, it's for the order of the world. Russia fights for a revision of the order that arose after 1991, and the West for its maintenance. This is no longer a local clash, but a test of the strength of 2 models of civilization. In specified a conflict, no compromise is possible due to the fact that it would mean the defeat of either party.

A war no 1 wants to win

Israel does not want to occupy Gaza due to the fact that it knows that the business would mean thousands of killed soldiers and work for 2 million hostile citizens. Hamas cannot win in the classical sense – his triumph is survival. Egypt and the US do not want escalation due to the fact that all hr of war increases oil prices and threatens to detonate the region. Therefore, all offensive in Gaza ends the same way: global pressure, negotiation, mediation of Qatar or Egypt and temporary calm.

In Ukraine no 1 is reasoning of a ceasefire. Kiev cannot afford to frost the conflict due to the fact that it would mean giving part of the territory and granting the right to the aggressor. Moscow cannot retreat due to the fact that Putin built up his political identity in the war. The West does not push for peace, due to the fact that war – paradoxically – has become a way of weakening Russia without a direct clash. As a result, everyone wants to fight “some more” until the another side weakens.

Different scales and emotions

The war in Gaza is tragic, but territorially limited. Bombardment, rocket attacks, thousands of victims, images of ruins — and then a gradual return to fragile balance. Ukraine is simply a continental war, in which the front extends hundreds of kilometres, and all shift of the line by a kilometer costs hundreds of lives. It's a conflict that consumes billions of dollars a month, so it makes full economies addicted and creates fresh industrial-political links.

W The West Gaza public reacts rapidly to the drama of children, ruins, refugees. In Ukraine, emotions were replaced by ideological narratives: it is simply a war “for freedom”, “for democracy”, “about the value of the West”. And wars that become moral symbols end in the hardest — due to the fact that no symbol can give way.

A war that goes on due to the fact that maybe

A war in Gaza can be stopped due to the fact that its participants realize the limits of possible. They know that besides long an escalation will turn against them. The war in Ukraine is hard to end due to the fact that its participants inactive believe that the triumph is at hand — although it becomes increasingly illusory all month.

Point

In all of this, there is something else that strikes the most: a planet that has learned to live with war. Cameras, analyses, conferences, sanctions – all of this creates an impression of action, while in reality it captures motionlessness.

Each player present has its "reasonable rations", its own maps, strategies and narratives, but no 1 has the courage to say plainly that war has become a permanent part of the political landscape. so the Gaza Strip becomes on fire all fewer years and Ukraine turns into an armed wall between 2 civilizations. And as long as the planet is more afraid of peace than compromise—until there is inactive a fresh war at hand.
