Lithuania has started concrete actions to prepare the country for the darkest safety scenario. Work is underway close the borders with Belarus and Russia on strategical bridges and roads to be rapidly immobilized or destroyed in the event of an armed conflict. As the Lithuanian Armed Forces confirm, this is part of a wider defence plan known as the Baltic Defence Line.

This is not about symbolic gestures, but about the real preparation of civilian infrastructure for warfare. The selected communication facilities will be equipped with peculiar engineering structures for the fast usage of explosives. The goal is unambiguous: slowing down or blocking the possible march of aggressor troops.

Ground and infrastructure-based defence

The Lithuanian military emphasizes that the choice of bridges and roads is not accidental. It is determined by both the natural conditions of the site and the importance of the way in question for the state's defence system. This is primarily about delicate points that could be utilized by the opponent in the event of a conflict for the fast spread of armored and mechanized troops.

The scope of the work goes far beyond the bridges themselves. It besides includes the preparation of anti-tank dams, deepening melioration ditches, which can service as field obstacles, and even planting protective green belts. All to make offensive actions as hard as possible and force the aggressor to slow down the pace of attack.

Time a key factor

Lithuania's strategy is based on the presumption that time will be crucial in the event of an attack. Infrastructure is to become a defence tool – not to carry out long-term fighting, but to hold the opponent until NATO's defence mechanisms work effectively.

It is simply a realistic and deluded approach. The Baltic countries are well aware of their demographic and military limitations, so they focus on the thoughtful usage of land, infrastructure and engineering solutions already prepared.

Joint Baltic defence line

Lithuania's actions are not isolated. akin preparations are besides carried out by Latvia and Estonia. The Baltic Defence Line aims to make a coherent region delaying possible aggression from the east and to increase the region's ability to last the first phase of the conflict.

Baltic cooperation shows that the threat is taken seriously and political declarations go hand in hand with tough military decisions. This is simply a clear contrast to many Western European countries that have ignored defence issues over the years, hoping for an "unconditional peace".

The war in Ukraine changed its thinking

The immediate context of these actions remains the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. For Lithuania, as for Poland and another east states of the NATO flank, this war proves that the threat from Russia is not theoretical. The scenarios that were considered "alarmist" a decade ago present form the basis for defensive planning.

Lithuanian decisions show that the safety of the state requires not only alliances and declarations, but besides readiness for difficult, costly and unpopular actions, including preparations to destruct its own infrastructure, if essential to defend independence.

This is simply a lesson that should besides be heard in Poland: real sovereignty begins where the state is prepared to defend its territory with all available means.
