Kremlin: The deployment of atomic weapons in Finland would be a threat to Russia

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitri Pieskov expressed the view that the possible deployment of atomic weapons in Finland would endanger Russia and meet with its consequence – said the Reuter agency today.

– These are statements leading to an escalation of tension on the European continent," said Pieskov during a gathering with journalists, referring to the decision of the Finnish government, which announced the abolition of the ban on the deployment of atomic weapons in the country.

– erstwhile deploying atomic weapons in its territory, Finland will endanger us," said Pieskov.

As the Minister of Defence of Finland Antti Hakkanen noted on Thursday, this change does not affect any "dramaic" step, but aims only at removing the legal constraints that hindered the full usage of NATO collective defence mechanisms. The aim is to make it possible in the future to transport atomic weapons across the territory of the country, as well as to supply and own them, if this is related to the defence of Finland.

Finland is simply a associate of the North Atlantic Alliance until 2023.
