Fighting illegal immigration is 1 of Donald Trump's key policy points. His administration announced decisive action against all persons residing in the United States without legal status. In the face of these declarations, questions arise about the scale of deportation and the number of Poles that may be affected by this process.
Polish authorities on standby
The White home officially confirmed that deportations will be subject not only to people who committed serious crimes, but to all illegal immigrants – including Poles. Minister of abroad Affairs Radosław Sikorski informed in Brussels that Polish consulates in the US were put on advanced alert. The Polish authorities are to monitor the deportation process to see if the number of Poles expelled exceeds the erstwhile standards.
“Our consuls estimation that it could be up to 30,000 people throughout the United States,” said deputy chief of the MFA Henryk Mościcka-Dendys.
The actual number of deported Poles may be lower
Despite first estimates indicating the anticipation of deportation of up to 30 1000 Poles, the data presented by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Forcement (ICE) propose that this number may yet be much lower. Currently, the list of people to be deported includes precisely 2303 Poles. These are the persons to whom the immigration justice issued the "final removal order".
Immigration services halt on average 1,000 illegal immigrants a day, however, so far there are no media reports about the detention of Polish citizens. For comparison, the ICE list besides includes: 571 Germans, 402 French, 259 Lithuanians and 294 Hungarians.
Guantanamo – a fresh centre for illegal immigrants?
Immediately after taking office as president of the United States, Donald Trump took decisive steps to implement his immigration policy. 20 January, just after his swearing in, he signed respective regulations, including announcement of a state of emergency at the border with Mexico, suspension of the right to asylum and changing the rules for acquiring citizenship by birth in the United States.
As part of this action, the president besides signed a regulation on construction of a fresh detention centre for migrants and criminals at Guantanamo military base in Cuba. The facility is intended to accommodate 30,000 people and will be intended for those who are considered illegal immigrants and those who have broken law in the United States.
What happens to Poles who are illegally in the United States?
Although the number of Poles on the list for deportation is comparatively tiny compared to another national groups, the situation remains dynamic. The Polish authorities guarantee that they monitor the case and support citizens who are in difficulty.
For people at hazard of deportation, it may be crucial to consult an immigration lawyer and take steps to legalise their status. Meanwhile, Polish consulates stay in a state of readiness to respond to possible notifications and intervene on behalf of their citizens.
In view of the intensification of deportation activities in the US, it is worth following further information on this issue and checking the available possibilities of legal protection for Polish immigrants.
