Cardinal Beniamino Stella uncommon at the seventh plenary assembly of cardinals before the conclave. Cardinal Stella spent most of his life in the diplomatic service of the Holy See. After receiving priestly ordination in 1966, he joined the Pontifical Church Academy, where diplomats of the Holy See are educated. He then joined the diplomatic service of the Holy See in 1970 and served in her diplomatic missions to the Dominican Republic and Zaire (now Democratic Republic of the Congo), before being recalled to the Vatican State Secretariat from 1976 to 1978 and from 1983 to 1987.
Pope John Paul II ordained him Archbishop and appointed a pronutius in the Republic of Congo and Chad in 1987. He then sent him as a nuncio to Cuba in 1992 and Colombia in 1999. In 2007, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him head of the Pontifical Church Academy. Francis trusted him and appointed him Prefect of the Congregation for the Priesthood in September 2013. He held this function until 2021.
Cardinal Stella is 83 years old and cannot vote or compete in the upcoming conclave.
