I'm not surprised. Cardinal Rys has long been distinguished by his evangelical gaze and courage in making hard subjects. The creation of a truly independent committee composed of experts – lawyers, historians, psychologists – to analyse cases of sexual abuse of minors in the archdiocese is simply a clear signal of work and readiness to face a painful past.
How to disagree with the Cardinal's words:
"It is primarily the victims that are crucial – not the perpetrators who are mostly already dead. The injured are inactive alive and there is inactive a chance to meet them, aid them... and ask for forgiveness.”
In addition, there is simply a call for a "renewal of language" towards migrants and refugees – a reminder that the social discipline of the Church speaks of the right of everyone to choose where to live and the request to respect his culture, language and faith:
“Christianity is not a tribal religion.”
It is simply a voice that sounds courageous and extremist in the Polish Church, and at the same time remains full evangelical – focused on human dignity and work for others.
