The Canadian army presently uses more than 1,100 light-duty LUXW SMP tactical vehicles (militarized Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon) and about 1,000 LUVM MilCOST (militarized Chevrolet Silverado) which are working horses of land units. The thought of buying their successor first appeared in 2017 and lasted respective years in the analysis phase. The goal of the Light Utility Vehicle was to get not only their direct replacement, but 1 with better protective features, among others. The force here was to be placed on the ability to rapidly mount additional armor to supply protection against improvised explosive charges, shrapnel and handguns.
