Jastrzębska Węglowa (JSW) applied to the Social Insurance Institution (ZUS) to postpone the payment of contributions of about PLN 1.3 billion. The company wants to postpone payments to January 2026 and then spread the payment into 24 instalments. The decision results from the deteriorating financial situation of the company, which in 2024 recorded a net failure of PLN 7.3 billion.
JSW's application to ZUS – what is it?
On 11 April 2025, the Management Board of the JSW adopted a resolution on the submission of applications to the Social Security, wellness and the Labour Fund, the Guaranteed Workers' Benefits Fund and the Pension Fund. Applications relate to contributions for the period April to December 2025.
The company wants to not only postpone the payment deadline, but besides spread the debt payment 24 months after the end of the postponement period, which is after January 2026.
Why does JSW request a postponement? Losses scope billions
In 2024, JSW reported a net failure of PLN 7.3 billion, while a year earlier it achieved a profit close to PLN billion. The main origin affecting this consequence was write-down of PLN 6.4 billion of non-financial fixed assets.
The company besides points to rising coal mining costs – in 2025 they amounted to over PLN 800 per tonne, while in 2023 it was just over PLN 700. As a result, the board of JSW decided on measures to improve liquidity.
Request for reimbursement of the solidarity contribution
In parallel, JSW applied to the Ministry of Climate reimbursement of the alleged solidarity contribution tallness PLN 1.61 billion. This contribution was imposed on the company in 2023 by the amendment of the Act on the Protection of Electricity Consumers. JSW stresses that she was the only company in the countryThe 1 who carried the cost.
Competition for coking coal deposits
In January 2025, the Ministry of Climate examined the application of a German company Silesian Coal global Group of Companies, which is applying for a licence for coke coal deposits in Dębieńsk. The same deposits are besides sought by JSW.
Former Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy Janusz Steinhoff in an interview with Money.pl, he stated that the Polish company should not number on preferential treatment:
"There are no preferences for Polish entities. This would be contrary to all the rules in force in the civilised world, and in peculiar in the European Union.".
Declining production and subsequent losses in mining
In November 2024, JSW noted PLN 315.3 million net lossand all Polish mining recorded during this period over PLN 9.2 billion loss.
Compared to the second 4th of 2023, the performance of the Treasury companies was much worse. In the first 4th of 2024, many companies made accounting copies to let fresh managements to start operations with a "pure card". However, in the second 4th it was besides not without further write-downs, which in any cases importantly worsened the results.
The largest copy in the mining sector was carried out by JSW – PLN 6.3 billion for failure of value of coal assets. akin actions were taken by Lubelskie Węglowa Bogdanka, which besides translated into losses.
Future prospects
Despite current difficulties, Updating copies may be reversed in the future, especially if coal prices rise. JSW presently employs over 32,000 employeesand in 2024 extracted around 12 million tonnes of coal (by 2 million tonnes little than in 2022). Coke production was more than 3 million tonnes.
Will the postponement of contributions and the possible return of the solidarity contribution aid JSW to recover? The decisions of the Social safety Office and the Ministry of Climate can be crucial for the future of the company.
