The Israeli committee approved plans to build settlements in the delicate area of the West Bank. The German government reacts as DW writes.

German abroad Minister Johann Wadephul condemned the approval of plans to build Israeli settlements in a peculiarly delicate area of the West Bank. “The implementation of specified projects would be incompatible with global law and would undermine the possible of a two-state solution,” said CDU policies during a visit to Jakarta.

The concept of 2 states implies the creation of an independent Palestinian state, functioning peacefully alongside Israel. Israel's prime minister, Benjamin Netanjah, opposes this solution, as did muslim Hamas in the Gaza Strip. As the head of the German MFA stressed, the German government advocates a two-state solution. "Therefore, we powerfully advise against continuing this path," Wadephul noted.

Approved construction plans

The Israeli civilian administration construction committee approved plans for the fresh settlements," said Peace Now. The task covers about 3,4,000 apartments in the area between East Jerusalem and Maale Adumi settlement.

This area is considered to be exceptionally delicate due to geographical location. The building could impede or even prevent the creation of a coherent territory of the future Palestinian State. The right-wing Israeli finance minister Bezalel Smotrich announced appropriate plans little than a week ago.

According to the spokesperson for the German MFA, the task would ‘de facto separate the northern part of the West Bank from the confederate part’. Consequently, the mobility of Palestinians in both the West Bank and East Jerusalem would be importantly reduced.

Wadephul: Chance of ceasefire

Wadephul, referring to the indirect talks between Israel and muslim Hamas, pointed out that “there is now a large chance for a common agreement. I can only powerfully appeal to take this opportunity."

According to “Times of Israel”, the head of the German abroad Ministry remains in contact with his Israeli counterpart, Gideon Saar, as well as with ministers from Turkey, Egypt and Qatar, who keep contact with Hamas. The Israeli government is considering a fresh proposal for a ceasefire that Hamas himself claims late accepted.

The German Government inactive opposes sanctions

In consequence to the announced mobilisation of any 60,000 Israeli reservists in connection with the planned acquisition of the city of Gaza, Deputy spokesperson for the German government, Steffen Meyer stated: "We argue the escalation of military activities and call on all parties and the global community to suspend weapons immediately and permanently."

In consequence to the question of the German aversion to possible European Union sanctions against Israel, Meyer pointed out that all available diplomatic means of impact were inactive being used.
