American intervention – assessed in Germany as a risky but groundbreaking movement – according to any commentators, may become an unexpected chance for Iran to get out of the deadlock. In the background, however, there is simply a bitter diagnosis of the political marginalization of Europe, which is again looking at events from the side. In this atmosphere, the visit of Chancellor Friedrich Merz to Washington, D.C., and the question of what position will be presented to US president Donald Trump, is peculiarly important.
