Gdańsk faces further problems. After the fresh closure of the Siennicki Bridge and the expanding traffic jams in the city, there is another unpleasant news – Gdańsk Buses and Tramwaje (GAiT) did not receive backing for the acquisition of fresh trams under the National Recovery Plan (KPO).

Application Rejected from Formal Reasons

Gdańsk Buses and trams applied for over PLN 67 million to acquisition 11 modern trams. However, according to the information published on the website of the Centre for EU Transport Projects, the proposal did not meet the formal requirements and was rejected. The deficiency of these means that Gdańsk will not join cities specified as Bydgoszcz, Poznań, Wrocław or Kraków, which have successfully won funds for modernization of rolling stock.

This is simply a immense failure of the GAiT board and the officials liable for urban communications. another cities enjoy it, and Gdansk loses tens of millions of PLN. I will request an explanation of who is liable for the ill-prepared proposal – says opposition councillor Przemysław Majewski.

Old trams stay on the tracks, no fresh trams

For years now there has been talk about the request to modernise the tram rolling stock, including the replacement of old N8C trams imported from Dortmund. Their operation becomes more expensive, and the comfort of travel leaves much to be desired. KPO funds were expected to aid solve this problem. Unfortunately, due to the formal errors in the proposal, the city must deal with the taste.

Many people were promised to rise EU funds, but present it turns out that we are far behind. This is simply a failure of the city board and GAiT," added Przemysław Majewski.

Will officials endure the consequences?

The case is besides controversial due to the work of GAiT officials and management. In the opinion of Councilman Majewski, work falls straight on the CEO of GAiT Maciej Lisicki and Vice president Piotr Borawski, who is liable for transport in the city. The councillor announced that he would request detailed explanations and punishment of the guilty.

In this case, we have addressed questions to GAiT. We're waiting for an answer.

Lack of co-financing is simply a painful blow to the residents of Gdańsk, who hoped for more comfortable and modern means of transport. Without EU money, the city will gotta look for alternate sources of backing or postpone the modernisation of rolling stock for the future.
