The Chinese couple smuggled fungus spores into the US, which could destruct crops and lead to food poisoning. FBI alerts: possible biological weapons and agro-terrorism tool. Investigators fishy ties to the Chinese government, and the defendants are scientists with experience in working on pathogens.


The U.S. Attorney's Office accused a couple of Chinese of smuggling a dangerous biological pathogen, which is simply a possible terrorist weapon. The fungus, named Fusarium graminearum in Latin, causes plant diseases, including harm to grain ears.

FBI investigators established that 34-year-old scientist Liu Zunyong attempted to smuggle fungus spores from the PRC to the US erstwhile he came to visit his partner, 33-year-old Jian Yunqing. This occurred in July 2024 at Detroit Airport.

During the hearing, the man initially claimed he did not know about the possible biological weapon in his backpack. He later changed his testimony, saying he was planning on utilizing the material for investigation at the University of Michigan laboratory where Jian worked. The university has not commented on this event so far. This university is not authorised to conduct specified studies.

As it was established, Liu and Jian had already conducted technological investigation on this mushroom species in the PRC, which were financed by the government. Jian is simply a associate of the Communist organization of China.

FBI Agent Cheyvoryea Gibson said that the actions of this couple "were a direct threat to public security."

The U.S. Ministry of Justice confirmed that the pair conspired to smuggle a fungus into the US that causes fusariosis of grain ears, or harm to wheat, barley, rice, or maize ears. After entering food, it may origin vomiting and liver damage, and in pregnant women abortion.

According to the FBI, this fungus is classified in professional literature as a "potential agri-terrorism weapon". Pathogen is liable for "dollar billions of economical losses worldwide all year".

The charges came in the midst of a tense relation between the US and China, only a fewer days after president Trump's administration announced a "aggressive" visa withdrawal for Chinese citizens studying in the United States. (PAP)
