The leaders of the European Union at the Copenhagen summit initially supported the creation of the drone wall and the east Flanka Guard. According to the Head of the European Council, António Costa, these projects are crucial for the EU's common defence readiness by 2030.

"This is simply a key step towards achieving a common defence readiness by 2030. This reflects the serious threat facing the east flank" - Costa said. The subject gained importance after fresh violations of the airspace of respective associate States, including Poland, by Russia.

Urgent defence projects

In a letter to EU leaders before the Wednesday meeting, the European Commission wrote that the drone wall and the east Flanka defender require peculiar urgency. These projects should be implemented without hold in relation to airspace breaches.

Costa assessed that the function of the defence ministers of the associate States must be increased at EU level. This is to better coordinate efforts to build European security.

Support for Ukraine

The second crucial subject of the summit was the war in Ukraine. Costa announced that the leaders had held an first discussion on mobilising further support for the country.

"The message is clear. Russia needs to realize that Ukraine's partners, including its European partners, have the will and means to proceed to support it until a fair and lasting peace is achieved," Costa said. In this context, the proposal to usage Russian frozen assets was discussed.

Countervailing asset loan

The European Commission has proposed to the associate States to finance a reparation debt of EUR 140 billion for Ukraine. The money would come from the Euroclear clearing home in Belgium, which would grant a debt with zero interest.

Belgium is skeptical of specified a solution, fearing, among another things, court lawsuits from Russia. Head of KE Ursula von der Leyen reported that she presented the proposal to the leaders who expressed interest.

"I would peculiarly like to thank Friedrich Merz, (the German Chancellor), who immediately supported this proposal," said von der Leyen. She added that Belgium cannot be the only country at hazard - it should be spread more widely. The discussion is to continue.
