On 24 October this year, the European Parliament (PE) adopted a resolution entitled "Resolution of the European Parliament on the incorrect explanation of UN Resolution 2758 by the People's Republic of China and its continuing military provocations around Taiwan". The resolution was voted on by 432 MEPs, 60 against and 71 abstentions. The resolution is based on 22 points, including:

  • confirm Taiwan's position as a key partner of the European Union and praise its democracy.
call on the European Commission to prepare for discussions on an investment agreement or another agreements with Taiwan.
  • Expressing concern about the situation in the East China and South China Sea and China-Russia military relations. Support for US military presence in the Indo-Pacific region.
  • the opposition of the EP to China's "continuous distortion" of UN Resolution 2758 and their efforts to block Taiwan's participation in global organisations. The EP "strongly rejects and condemns the attempts of the PRC to distort global past and principles".
  • call on the EU to consider sanctions, including economical ones, as a way to designate "red lines" for China. Indication of the request to cooperate with countries with akin views in order to introduce strong diplomatic and economical measures which deter China.
  • upholding the EU's commitment to "one China" policy and opposes any unilateral change in the position quo in the Taiwan Strait by force.

On October 25th this year, the Chinese EU mission spokesperson powerfully protested the resolution. He pointed out that it was adopted despite strong opposition from China due to the fact that it distorts facts, violates global law and constitutes a blatant provocation to the post-war global order. China powerfully condemns specified a violation of the "one China" rule and interference in their interior affairs.

UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 was adopted on 25 October 1971. The Assembly considered the ‘representatives of the People's Republic of China to be the only legal representatives of China in the United Nations’ and at the same time removed the ‘representatives of Chang Kaj-sheka (i.e. the Government of the Republic of China) from the place which they illegally occupy in the UN and all associated organizations’. This resolution was the starting point for establishing authoritative diplomatic relations between the US and China, which yet occurred in 1979.

So what distortion of past is this resolution about, which was evidently supported by the majority of Polish MEPs?

And yet an crucial issue, or chronology of events:
1894 “The Japanese-Chinese war is beginning (Japan is an aggressor). China (very weak as a consequence of the opium wars and alleged "unbalanced treaties") lost the war. As part of the peace treaty (1895), the Empire of Japan takes over the island of Formoza along with the full archipelago from the Chinese Empire.
1945 – The Empire of Japan surrenders (the end of planet War II in the Pacific). On the basis of the peace treaty, he returns Formosa to China. At the time, China was recognized as the Chinese Republic with Chang Kaj Shek at the head.
1945 – In China there is simply a civilian war between nationalists led by Chang Kaj Shek and communists led by Mao Zedong
1949 Nationals lose the civilian war. Communists proclaim the emergence of the People's Republic of China, which is initially recognized by the states of the socialist bloc.
1971 "The UN recognises the People's Republic of China as the only legal representation of China in the United Nations and internationally, while removing representatives of the Republic of China from all its agendas and organisations.

1979 “The United States is establishing diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China, while breaking diplomatic relations with the Chinese Republic in Taiwan (as Formosis was called).
2024 "All states that have established diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China since 1949 have recognized it as China's sole global typical and, consequently, have considered Taiwan not a sovereign entity within the meaning of global relations, but a part of China.
