On May 17, thousands of people took part in a march in Tbilisi to celebrate household Day. The marches with icons and Georgian flags set out from Rustatel Avenue towards the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity.

Members of the Georgian Dream party's government and children joined the march. Everyone thanked the Catholics-Patriarchs of all Georgia, Ilji II, at the initiative of which the vacation was established 11 years ago. Prime Minister Kobachidze stated that the current march was, among another things, "the expression that the Georgian people would powerfully defend conventional values to the end".

Family Day was established in 2014 as a counterweight for the global Day Against Homophobia, which is besides celebrated on May 17. He was preceded by the events of 2013 erstwhile demonstration against homophobia in Tbilisi was interrupted by extremist activists and clergymen.

At the same time, about 20 people protested before Parliament — close to those detained during anti-government demonstrations supporting the pro-European course of Georgia. They kept photos of arrested opponents of the authorities and posters. 1 of them preached: “Parents on emigration, children in prison — is this a day of household holiness for you?”

The admin of the Patriarch's throne, the metropolitan of Senaki and Czchorock, Szio (Mujiri), addressed the participants of the march, calling for legislative restrictions on abortion.

"Laws that will regulate this issue must be passed," said the clergyman. He added that rules that "more or little restrict abortions" are adopted in EU countries and that 10 US states have completely banned it.

Before the law changes, however, the metropolitan offered to rise public awareness — specified as talking to the students of the older classes about the harmfulness of abortion from a intellectual and physiological point of view.

"If the country does not take any action, it is self-destructive and nothing good awaits it," he added.

In addition to Tbilisi, marches took place in 10 another cities of Georgia and gathered many participants everywhere. Opposition media reported that government officials were forced to participate in the march.
