"Morawiecki in Bucharest supported George Simion in the election for president of Romania. He is the leader of the openly pro-Russian and anti-European AUR party. Romania is simply a key partner in defending the east border of the Union and NATO. They don't even pretend anymore," Donald Tusk wrote on the X platform.

- I'm in Romania to support my friend. George Simion is moving for president of Romania. I think this is the best man for these difficult, unstable times," said Mateusz Morawiecki in Friday's recording.

Who's George Simion?

A far-right politician is the founder and organization leader of the Alliance for Romanian Unity (AUR). It actively promotes the unification of Romania and Moldova, as the authorities in Chisinau found provocation. It has been expelled from Moldova respective times and is besides recognised as persona non grata.

If Simion had won the elections, Romania's relations with Ukraine and Moldova could have worsened significantly, as he is presently banned from entering both countries. Kiev blocked Simion due to its "systematic anti-Ukrainian actions". However, he himself claims that the reason for the ban is his ‘pro-Romanian activity’.

His triumph would mean moving the country to the right, and the triumph of any another candidate would indicate the continuation of the current Romanian abroad policy.

He has served in the Romanian Parliament since 2020. In November 2024 he competed in the nullified presidential election, in which he finished fourth.
