Since the beginning of 2025, 78 HPAI outbreaks in commercial stocks have been confirmed in Poland, which is the highest consequence in the European Union.Most cases were reported in Wielkopolska voivodships (37 outbreaks) and Mazowieckie voivodships (28 outbreaks) . Over 6.5 million birds have already been eradicated from the epidemic.
The European Commission is announcing emergency safety measures which may include a ban on the sale of poultry from parts of the regions.The intensive talks between the Polish authorities and Brussels are underway – billions of euros depend on their result and the stableness of our poultry market.
Representatives of the Polish poultry manufacture express their deep concern about planned restrictions.They stress that specified measures can lead to serious economical and social losses, including the bankruptcy of farms, processing plants and occupation losses.The manufacture calls for consideration and proportionality in the activities of EU institutions, pointing to advanced bioinsurance standards utilized in Polish farms.
"About 60% of Polish production is sold abroad, of which the vast majority, about 65% are sold on the EU market, and about 35% on 3rd country markets. The value of exports to markets outside the Community amounted to over PLN 6.3 billion in 2024. The planned restrictions will besides affect egg producers. Against the global background, Poland continues to hold a strong position as a leading maker of consumer eggs in the EU and crucial exports, as recalled in the appeal of the poultry sector
The situation is dynamic and the decisions of the European Commission are to be taken soon.The Polish authorities proceed negotiations with Brussels, seeking to limit the scope of the planned restrictions and defend the home poultry sector from serious consequences.
Due to the threat to 1 of the key sectors of the Polish economy, it is essential to find a solution that will, on the 1 hand, guarantee an effective fight against the HPAI epidemic and, on the another hand, defend the interests of Polish producers and consumers.
"The poultry manufacture is not only farmers and processing plants – it is the full ecosystem of thousands of companies and farms: grain and feed producers, hatcheries, packing plants, transport plants, cold stores, and modern method infrastructure. The simplification in production and trade will inevitably consequence in many of these entities losing liquidity and consequently in redundancies and bankruptcies. For hundreds of thousands of families, this represents a real threat of occupation losses and, consequently, livelihoods" - stressed the appeal
