On 6 September, the SZU operational grouping in the Balakliya area transitioned to offensive action, attacking north and south of the city. Tactical success turned into an operational breakthrough of the front in the following days - not only was Balaklia itself occupied, but the vanguard (separate mobile forces) broke in after 3 days of counter-punching (6-8 September) for almost 40-50 km behind the broken front line, resulting in the scattering of the front in the Balaklia-Kupiansk-Izium area.
