Cherson: “Leave!” Dramatic appeal before winter, Russia destroyed the power plant

Cherson may stay out of electricity and heating for more than a fewer days. The Russians bombed the local CHP plant, and the head of the Kherson regional military administration Alexander Prokudin appealed on 27 August 2026 to residents to leave town before winter. The appeal was primarily addressed to families with children and older people.

Prokudin said that the authorities were incapable to warrant the residents of heat and power in the upcoming heating season, and asked those who have a place to go to do so now.

If you have the chance to leave or relatives or friends in safer regions – leave!

The head of the circuit added that after the last attack, it is no longer possible to presume that the heat and power plant or another critical infrastructure facilities will work in average mode this winter.

Four bombs directed. Heat plant destroyed

The Kherson CHP plant was the mark of Russian aviation already a day earlier, August 26, but this time losses are incomparably larger. 4 guided aerial bombs were utilized in the attack. All devices liable for heat and electricity generation were destroyed.

The Ukrainian administration emphasizes that the facility was of a purely civilian nature and there were no military targets. According to Prokudin, the only aim of the strike was to terrorize civilians and deprive the tens of thousands of Chersonia residents of the heat source.

A day later, on Friday, August 28, a 61-year-old man was killed in another shelling and 3 people were injured.

As of July 1, 170 piloted aircraft bombs fell to the perimeter. Over 1,700 impact drones have been utilized there in 2 months, and in the last week alone there have been 6.5 1000 attacks with FPV drones, or tiny machines controlled on camera surveillance.

Directed air bombs are average free-fall bombs equipped with a navigation module and wings, so that the aircraft can drop them from a distance of respective twelve kilometres. Their cargo counts in hundreds of kilograms, so a single hit is adequate to shut down a large industrial object. The FPV drones are the opposite: cheap, light, utilized to hunt single cars and people on the street.

Cherson under fire from the left bank of Dnieper

The Russians seized Kherson in March 2022, in the first weeks of a full-scale invasion launched on 24 February. The city was liberated by the Ukrainian military on 11 November 2022, but the front stopped at Dnieper and has since run across the river. In August 2026 Ukraine celebrated 35th Anniversary of Independence.

Cherson lies on the right bank, and Russian positions on the left bank are separated from the city streets virtually the width of the river. Artillery and drones go all the way from there, so all repair of infrastructure takes place under fire, and repair crews themselves become targets.

Evacuation: transport, accommodation and hotline numbers

The circuit administration announced that the evacuated was providing transport, accommodation in safer regions and social support.

Applications accept 2 contact lines of the circuit: 0 800 101 102 and 0 800 330 951. There is besides a national government hotline at number 1548. Before the full-scale invasion, Kherson had over 280,000 inhabitants; present there are many fewer, and the authorities have not reported the current number.

Prokudin did not declare forced evacuation. The appeal is simply a request, not a warrant, and concerns first of all those who would be most susceptible to the deficiency of heating in winter: tiny children, the aged and the sick.

Winter 2026/2027 and attacks on energy

In erstwhile seasons Russia has repeatedly hit Ukrainian power stations and transmission networks, leaving millions of people without electricity, and the heating period 2026/2027 begins in a fewer weeks.
