Vladimir Putin knows that the Russian army is incapable to gain the alleged belt of fortresses in Donbasa, a line of Ukrainian fortifications built for a decade and considered the strongest in the country. That is why he wants to pull them out of Ukraine at the negotiating table, hoping that the force of Donald Trump on Kiev and European allies will get them to compromise. For Ukrainians, however, it would be unthinkable to quit this belt without fighting – it would mean surrendering and betraying the victims of soldiers.
