Chinese automotive giant BYD continues the offensive on the nipponese market, entering a section traditionally dominated by native producers. At the end of July 2026, the company officially introduced the Racco model – a full electrical minicar kind “kei car”. The aggressive pricing policy and the scope of competition is intended to attract drivers not only from major metropolises, but mainly from smaller towns and agrarian areas.
The kei car category (light vehicles) accounts for almost 40 percent of the full sales of fresh cars in Japan. These inexpensive ultracompact cars are ideally suited to narrow streets and areas outside city centres where there is simply a deficiency of an extended public transport network, and petrol stations are increasingly frequent. So far this section has been almost entirely dominated by nipponese brands specified as Honda, Suzuki or Nissan.
The introduction of the Racco model is simply a strategical BYD decision aimed at relaunching sales in Japanwhere the company has been struggling to gain greater designation since its debut on the passenger car marketplace in 2023. By the end of 2025, the Chinese maker had sold just over 7400 vehicles there.
Attractive price and technological advantage
The key argument in the fight for a nipponese client is the price. Recommended retail price of the basic version of the Racco model begins from 1.95 million yen (about $12200) before taxation and deduction of subsidies. After taxes, the starting price is 2.145 million yen. According to analysts, maintaining a price below the intellectual barrier of 2 million yen (after grants) is essential to attract a mass recipient in this segment.
The main competitor of Chinese novice is Nissan Sakura – the best-selling electrical minicar in Japan.

Although the first price of Racco is lower, Nissan Sakura is eligible for higher government subsidies, which makes the final acquisition cost to the consumer in the case of a nipponese car somewhat lower. However, BYD Racco makes up for it with method parameters.
The vehicle is equipped with a lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) battery with a capacity of 35,84 kWh. This model offers a minimum scope of 210 kilometres, and in higher variants up to 320 kilometres per charging. By comparison, the full charged Nissan Sakura is able to cover only 180 kilometres. Racco's additional asset is the sliding rear door – a solution highly popular among nipponese families that first appeared in the electrical car of this class.

Ambitious sales targets
The CEO of BYD car Japan, Atsuki Tofukuji, announced that the company aims to collect 10,000 orders for the Racco model by the end of 2026. During his gathering with journalists, he admitted that this goal was due to “determination and feeling” alternatively than detailed marketplace analyses. Tofukuji believes that maintaining sales at this level in subsequent years will be possible if dealerships are able to make an average of 1 order per day.

The beginnings seem promising. According to manufacture media, only a week after the marketplace debut, BYD has already collected over 700 orders, which represents about 7 percent of the yearly mark (including demonstration vehicles). Nevertheless, analysts, including Tang Jin of Mizuho Bank, indicate that the force to implement the assumptions is enormous. If request is lower than expectations, BYD may be forced to introduce aggressive promotion campaigns or add fresh functions as standard.

Global expansion of Chinese producers, specified as BYD, is an expanding challenge for nipponese automotive companies. Companies from the Flowering Cherry Country, which are already losing their shares in the Chinese marketplace for local electrical brands, must now defend their position in their own backyard, in the most unique and protected marketplace segment.
