LONDON- A British Airways (BA) flight attendant was sentenced after being found naked and under the influence of drugs on a transatlantic flight from San Francisco International Airport (SFO) to London Heathrow Airport (LHR).

The incident involved 41 year old Haden Pentecost, who admitted performing an aviation function while impaired. He avoided immediate prison but received a suspended sentence, community service, and financial penalties.

British Airways Attendant Found Naked

Isleworth Crown Court heard that Pentecost was due to serve on the British Airways (BA) long-haul service in May.

Before departure from San Francisco (SFO), he told colleagues he had stomach cramps but insisted he was fit for duty.

During the flight, colleagues noticed he was pale, sweaty, and erratic. At one point, he locked himself inside a lavatory and emerged naked, unable to recognize basic facts such as the year or the US president.

According to BBC, his behavior left the captain and crew under significant strain, as they had to continue a 10-hour flight without his professional support.

Pentecost consumed between 15 and 20 bottles of water during the flight, a sign of drug-related dehydration. Medical professionals on board assessed him before paramedics met the aircraft upon landing at Heathrow (LHR). He was taken to Hillingdon Hospital for further evaluation.

A blood test confirmed the presence of methamphetamine and amphetamine. Prosecutors emphasized that Pentecost failed to perform pre-flight safety checks and abandoned crew responsibilities, creating a substantial distraction for the captain and colleagues.

Sentencing Breakdown and Legal

Judge Hannah Duncan initially considered a 12 month prison sentence, but mitigating factors reduced it:

  • Reduced to nine months for his previous good character.
  • His sentence was lowered to six months for his early guilty plea.
  • Suspended for 12 months due to his non-aggressive behavior and acknowledgment of responsibility.

In addition, Pentecost was ordered to complete 80 hours of unpaid work and pay £150 in costs. Prosecutors noted the offense carried a maximum penalty of 2 years, but the case was considered “unique” with no existing sentencing guidelines for such circumstances.

Career and Personal Impact

Defense counsel Jon Harrison told the court that Pentecost had lost the career he valued deeply.

He entered court “a man without the profession he sought to develop after Covid,” highlighting how the pandemic had already disrupted his long-term employment.

While passengers were reportedly unaware of his condition during the flight, the disruption for crew underlined how impairment could compromise aviation safety.

The case has been cited as a reminder of the importance of strict drug and alcohol policies within the airline industry.

Similar Incident

In another incident, a British Airways (BA) cabin crew member was arrested at London Heathrow Airport (LHR) following an unusual inflight disturbance on a San Francisco (SFO) to London (LHR) service.

The steward failed to report for duty during meal service on the Airbus A380-800, which carried about 470 passengers and crew. Flight attendants initiated a search when he did not return to his assigned responsibilities.

The in-flight crew supervisor eventually located him in a Club World lavatory, where he was discovered completely nude and dancing. Shocked colleagues quickly clothed him with spare First Class pyjamas before moving him to a premium cabin seat for the remainder of the flight.

Authorities were alerted during the journey, and police met the aircraft when it landed at Heathrow at 11 AM on Sunday.

The crew member, who required wheelchair assistance, was arrested on arrival and provided with immediate medical attention as part of emergency response procedures.
