Data on ATMs and payments in Poland were made available by the National Bank of Poland, according to the latest reports. Despite the introduction of fresh regulations governing this industry, the number of these devices continues to increase.
The National Bank of Poland provided up-to-date information on the number of ATMs and payments operating in Poland in the second 4th of 2023. Interestingly, despite the introduction of fresh regulations, the number of these devices remains on the growth path.
ATMs and deposits in Poland
In the second 4th of 2023, precisely 21,787 ATMs were registered in Poland, which represents an increase of 353 devices compared to the first 4th of the same year and at the same time 286 more than in the same period in 2022. The number of deposits has besides increased, reaching 10,871 machines, which represents an increase of 192 devices compared to the erstwhile quarter.
Not only the amount, but besides the full value of both ATM withdrawals and deposits recorded an increase. In the second quarter, an awesome number of 130.2 million withdrawal transactions with a full value of PLN 101.9 billion were recorded. Compared to the first quarter, where there were 125.1 million transactions with a full of PLN 100.6 billion, this represents a crucial increase. The payments to the machines besides recorded an increase, reaching 25.5 million transactions with a full value of PLN 60.1 billion. In the first quarter, it was 23.9 million transactions worth PLN 53.4 billion respectively.
These statistic show the continued increase in the popularity of ATM services and payments in Poland. This, in turn, may propose expanding public assurance in these forms of financial transactions and the improvement of banking infrastructure in the country.
New background legislation
As of January 1, 2024, fresh regulations are in force, requiring at least 40 percent of ATMs in Poland to be equipped with an IBNS (intelligent banknote neutrality system). This advanced strategy has the ability to dye banknotes if attempted theft is detected, which is an additional layer of protection.
However, the introduction of this strategy generates advanced costs, which, according to any experts, may consequence in less ATMs available to the public. Companies may be inclined to quit the maintenance of those devices that make little profits, as a consequence of which the public may feel restrictions on access to ATMs.
An interesting paradox appears in the light of the admission to Planet Cash's simplification in ATM numbers in August. Although specified a decision may be in line with Western European trends, where the simplification in the number of ATMs is common, in Poland ATMs stay well and enjoy constant demand.
It is worth a closer look at this phenomenon, wondering whether the introduction of fresh regulations will actually have a negative impact on the availability of ATMs for citizens, or whether there are also solutions to keep the balance between transaction safety and access to financial services.
