BANGKOK– Bangkok Airways (PG) is preparing to order up to 30 new aircraft to renew its aging fleet and capitalize on tourism growth sparked by the popularity of the television series White Lotus.
The mid-sized Thai carrier plans to approach Airbus, Boeing, and Embraer for at least 20 single-aisle jets in the first half of the year, with options for approximately 10 more. The airline aims to expand its fleet to at least 30 jets within the next four to five years.

The carrier currently operates 25 jets, with some aircraft already reaching 20 years of service.
“We need to grow and a new aircraft fleet would be mandatory.”
-Puttipong Prasarttong-Osoth, CEO, Bangkok Airways
Bangkok Airways (PG) operates routes connecting Bangkok (BKK) with major tourist destinations. These include Koh Samui (USM), which served as a filming location for the latest season of White Lotus.
The airline owns the airport on this island, giving it a virtual monopoly on flights to this popular vacation spot. The acclaimed series is expected to trigger a significant influx of tourists to Thailand.
Tourism would contribute to the government’s projection of a record 40 million visitors to the country this year!
Puttipong reported that the carrier has already witnessed a 14% increase in advanced flight bookings for the second quarter. This quarter is considered to be typically a slow season in Thailand’s tourism calendar.

Bangkok Airways Passenger Growth
With increased traffic anticipated, the company will commence a 1.5 billion baht ($45 million) renovation of Samui Airport (USM) in the second half of this year.
The project is expected to span three years, with the airport remaining operational throughout the renovation period. Bangkok Airways (PG) has secured approval to increase its daily flights to 73 from the current 50.
The carrier forecasts flying a record 4.7 million passengers this year, up from 4.3 million in 2023, according to Puttipong. Bangkok Airways anticipates 10% to 20% more passengers than last year’s 2.7 million specifically on its routes to Koh Samui.

Bangkok’s Global Tourism Significance
Bangkok (BKK) has established itself as one of Asia’s premier tourism hubs, attracting visitors from across the globe with its unique blend of historical temples, vibrant street life, and modern attractions.
The Thai capital consistently ranks among the world’s most visited cities, serving as both a destination and a gateway to Thailand’s renowned beaches, islands, and northern highlands.
Tourism authorities have successfully marketed Bangkok’s distinctive characteristics—from its floating markets and ornate palaces to its celebrated culinary scene and nightlife—creating a strong international brand identity that appeals to diverse traveller segments.
The city’s tourism infrastructure has evolved to accommodate increasing visitor numbers, with luxury hotels, international shopping centres, and enhanced public transportation networks supporting its position as a regional travel powerhouse.
Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) serves as a crucial aviation hub for Southeast Asia, facilitating connections throughout the Asia-Pacific region and beyond.
This strategic position has enabled Bangkok to become an essential component of global tourism circuits, particularly for travellers from China, India, Europe, and North America seeking fascinating yet accessible destinations with well-developed facilities.
