AP: Floods destroyed coastal villages in confederate Bulgaria

The authorities reported on Friday that the floods that swept through villages in southeastern Bulgaria and on the Black Sea coast consumed 3 fatalities and forced hundreds of people to evacuate their homes.

Home Secretary Daniel Mitov said that among the 3 fatalities were 2 lifeguards who died during the flood in the coastal village of Elenite after dense rains. Part of the coastal region was badly destroyed, and floods washed cars and caravans to the sea, and flooded homes, hotels and campsites.

The Bulgarian authorities declared a state of emergency in respective cities on the Black Sea coast, where regional public transport was halted due to flooded roads after respective days of intense rainfall. Specialist teams of the Bulgarian Navy were sent to search for missing persons and assist in evacuation.

In another parts of the country, in the north-western part of the country, there were hard weather conditions, and in the Balkans the second day in a row there were dense snowfalls.

Many villages in the region experienced power outages due to wet snow. Roads and mountain passes were closed for traffic. The national railway undertaking reported crucial delays and cancellations of trains caused by fallen trees that damaged overhead power lines.

On Friday the Western Balkans besides experienced early snowfalls, which deprived thousands of people of electricity and disrupted traffic as roads became impenetrable.

The abundant snowfall in the hilly and mountainous areas of Serbia and Bosnia has caused energy lines to break down and trees to fall, and dense rains in the lower areas have caused fear of floods and mudslides.

According to Slobodan Sovilj, a meteorologist from the state's hydro-meteorological service has so far fallen more than half a metre of snow, and its level can scope evidence level for October.
