Amritsar Airport Records in 2024

The facility managed 22,589 aircraft movements throughout the year, with domestic flights accounting for 16,437 movements and international operations totaling 6,152. These numbers represent the highest operational volume in the airport’s history.

The airport’s growth metrics show substantial year-over-year expansion, with total passenger traffic increasing by 16.32% compared to 2023. Domestic traffic rose by 14.06%, while international passenger numbers surged by 21.31%.

December 2024 emerged as the airport’s busiest month on record, processing 340,408 passengers. This peak period saw 229,738 domestic travelers and 110,670 international passengers moving through the terminal.

The growth trajectory positions Amritsar Airport for further expansion in 2025, as Indian airlines optimize their routes and increase capacity on existing services. International carriers VietJet and Thai Airways have initiated market assessments for potential Amritsar operations, signaling the airport’s rising prominence in regional aviation networks.

Untapped Routes with Strong Potential

Major untapped air routes from Amritsar Airport show significant market potential, according to aviation analyst Ravreet Singh’s assessment. The analysis identifies four strategic routes that could enhance Amritsar’s connectivity and serve distinct passenger segments.

A proposed Amritsar-Jaipur route would serve both leisure and business travelers, with substantial year-round demand. IndiGo could effectively operate this sector using ATR-72 aircraft with daily frequencies, matching capacity with projected passenger volumes.

The Amritsar-Nanded corridor presents a strong religious tourism opportunity, driven by its significance for Sikh pilgrims. Air India’s A319 aircraft could efficiently serve this route with four weekly flights, addressing the specific market requirements.

Surat emerges as a promising destination due to its industrial significance and religious tourism potential. The route analysis suggests IndiGo’s A320neo operating three weekly frequencies would optimize the commercial viability of this sector.

The Amritsar-Abu Dhabi route could complement existing UAE connections, building upon the success of 26 weekly services currently operating in Dubai and Sharjah. Daily A320neo or Boeing 737 operations by IndiGo or Air India Express could effectively capture this market demand.
