FORT WORTH- American Airlines (AA) flight AA292 has diverted to Rome (FCO) following a security threat during its New York (JFK) to New Delhi (DEL) route.
The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, carrying approximately 285 passengers, departed JFK on February 22, 2025, for what was planned as a 14-hour direct flight to Delhi.

American Airlines Flight Gets Bomb Threat
Flight tracking data from FlightRadar24 (FR24) shows the aircraft executed a mid-air turnaround over Turkmenistan, redirecting toward Rome Fiumicino Airport.
The selection of Rome as a diversion point suggests a measured response to the security situation, as American Airlines maintains established infrastructure and support operations at this location.
The aircraft, registered as N840AN, initiated the diversion after completing the majority of its planned route, having traversed the Atlantic Ocean and European airspace before reaching Turkmenistan. American Airlines’ decision to utilize Rome’s facilities indicates a strategic approach to managing the situation where operational support is readily available.
Flight crew duty time limitations will prevent the original crew from continuing the journey upon arrival in Rome. The airline has confirmed the presence of a security threat through internal sources, though specific details remain undisclosed at this time.
Operations at Rome will require a comprehensive security inspection of the aircraft before any continuation of the journey can be authorized. American Airlines has not yet announced a revised departure schedule for the remaining segment to Delhi.

Similar Incident
A security threat targeting Air New Zealand (NZ) flight NZ677 triggered an emergency response at Auckland Airport, causing significant operational disruption and passenger evacuation. The incident occurred moments before the Airbus A320’s scheduled 5:40 PM departure to Dunedin on February 23, 2025.
Airport authorities implemented immediate security protocols after receiving a specific phone-in threat against the aircraft. The flight crew returned the aircraft to its gate, where law enforcement initiated a comprehensive search of the plane and all passenger luggage.
Security teams conducted a systematic evacuation, removing passengers row by row to maintain order and safety during the procedure. Specialist units performed thorough sweeps of the aircraft and found no evidence of explosive devices or other security threats.
Air New Zealand’s operational integrity and safety officer, David Morgan, reaffirmed the airline’s commitment to passenger safety above operational convenience. The airline provided food and refreshments to affected passengers during the extended delay, though some travelers reported inadequate provisions during the initial response period.
One Dunedin passenger described the atmosphere as “distressing,” with concerns of a possible bomb threat circulating among those affected. Families with young children faced particular challenges during the prolonged security operation, though several passengers acknowledged the professional conduct of airline staff throughout the incident.
