SAN JUAN— An American Airlines (AA) flight was forced to return to San Juan (SJU) shortly after takeoff when a passenger misinterpreted a condolence text message as a possible bomb threat. The incident delayed the flight to Dallas–Fort Worth (DFW) by over three hours.
Flight AA1847, operated by an Airbus A321, took off with 193 passengers aboard before turning back just 11 minutes into the journey. The diversion was triggered by a passenger reporting a suspicious “RIP” message seen on a seatmate’s phone.

The July 3 incident began after American Airlines flight AA1847 departed from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) en route to Dallas–Fort Worth International Airport (DFW).
As the aircraft climbed to 16,000 feet, a passenger noticed a text message on a fellow traveler’s screen containing the phrase “RIP.” The individual interpreted it as a potential bomb threat and reported it to the cabin crew.
Following airline safety protocol, the flight crew promptly informed the cockpit. The captain decided to return to San Juan, prioritizing passenger safety. The aircraft landed safely back at SJU at 6:58 AM, just 32 minutes after takeoff.
TSA officials and airport security immediately boarded the aircraft to assess the situation. After inspection and interviews, it was determined that the message was part of a condolence exchange—the passenger had recently lost a family member and was traveling home for the funeral.

Authorities confirmed there was no credible threat to the flight. The aircraft was cleared to depart again around 9:40 AM, resulting in a delay of approximately 3.5 hours. Passengers remained onboard during the inspection, and no arrests were made.
Airport officials classified the event as a “misunderstanding handled according to protocol,” emphasizing that there was no actual danger. American Airlines did not release a separate statement but resumed normal operations following clearance.
This incident reflects the delicate balance between precaution and overreaction in aviation security. While protocols like “see something, say something” are vital, false alarms can create unnecessary disruptions. In this case, the decision chain—from passenger report to crew action—unfolded within minutes of takeoff.
