The Atom Power Plant occupied by Russia lost the completely external electrical power needed to cool atomic fuel in the reactors. The global Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) informed about this incidental on X.
The gym was forced to launch its own emergency generators after losing power supply from the external network. All six power plants stay shut down, but electricity is inactive needed for the cooling strategy to function properly.
Power restored after 3.5 hours
The IAEA reported the power was restored after a 3.5-hour break. The head of the Ukrainian energy ministry Herman Haluszchenko explained that Russian attacks destroyed power lines connecting the power plant to the national network.
The Zaporosian Atomic Power Plant, the largest atomic gym in Europe, has been under Russian business since the beginning of March 2022. Aggressor soldiers and employees of the Russian state-owned Rosatom group are stationed on the premises.
Multiple shelling poses a threat
The Russians have repeatedly shelled the site of the power plant, thus creating a radiation threat with hard to foretell consequences, as the authorities in Kiev estimate. By February 2022, or the beginning of the Kremlin's invasion of Ukraine, the power plant in Enerhodar was connected to 4 major power lines with a voltage of 750 kilovolts.
There were besides six spare lines of 330 kilovolts available to the management. The current situation shows the critical importance of unchangeable power for the safety of atomic installations.
