SEATTLE— Alaska Airlines (AS) Boeing 737 MAX 9 (737-9) experienced severe turbulence on its Seattle (SEA) to Phoenix (PHX) flight, prompting medical evaluations for multiple flight attendants and one passenger on December 26, 2024.
Flight AS700 encountered turbulent conditions at approximately 2:30 p.m. MST while approaching Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.
Alaska Airlines Attendants Injured
The aircraft landed at Phoenix Sky Harbor around 3:10 p.m. local time after the crew declared a medical emergency. While no passengers required hospitalization following the incident, several crew members underwent transportation to local hospitals for medical assessment.
Alaska Airlines confirmed their active support for the affected crew members during their recovery period. The airline acknowledged passenger concerns while commending the crew’s professional handling of the situation during the turbulent episode.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has launched an investigation into the incident. The regulatory body seeks to determine the causes behind the severe turbulence that affected the Seattle-originating flight.

Two days earlier, on November 13, 2024, Qantas (QF) flight QF528 from Sydney to Brisbane encountered turbulence that injured multiple passengers. A woman in her forties and a child under ten suffered bruising and lacerations during the incident.
The injured passengers received medical treatment at The Prince Charles Hospital in Brisbane following the flight’s safe landing, while another affected passenger declined medical assistance.
