CHRISTCHURCH– Air New Zealand (NZ) has resumed jet services between Christchurch (CHC) and Hamilton (HLZ), marking a significant milestone for Waikato travellers. The move introduces a domestic jet connection to Hamilton for the first time in 25 years.

The inaugural service, flight NZ324, landed in Hamilton (HLZ) at 4:20 pm, using an Airbus A320 aircraft. The airline has added 18,000 extra jet seats annually on this route, with an additional 7,000 seats through ATR 72 schedule enhancements, bringing the total boost to 25,000 seats.

Air New Zealand’s New Service to Hamilton

The reintroduction of jet flights between Christchurch and Hamilton reflects Air New Zealand’s strategy of expanding services where demand is clear.

This is only the second time the airline has deployed a domestic jet on a regional route, following the successful Invercargill (IVC) – Auckland (AKL) service launched in 2019.

For Waikato passengers, the return of jets brings added comfort and convenience. Air New Zealand has reinstated its popular Koru Hour service on the 5:05 pm Hamilton–Christchurch flight, offering premium New Zealand wines, craft beers, non-alcoholic options, and cheese and crackers.

To celebrate the launch, travellers on the inaugural service enjoyed an extended Koru Hour, with local touches such as Good George Brewing cider and Aotearoa Chocolate pretzels.

Community and Passenger Welcome

On arrival at Hamilton Airport (HLZ), passengers were greeted with a uniquely Waikato welcome. Local tourism icons, including Hobbiton Movie Set, Hamilton Gardens, Zealong Tea Estate, and Waitomo Caves, provided gifts to mark the occasion, underscoring the region’s hospitality and tourism appeal.

Waikato Regional Airport Chief Executive Mark Morgan described the moment as a “milestone” for the region, highlighting how the return of a domestic jet service strengthens Hamilton’s position as a regional hub.

He emphasized the economic and community benefits of improved connectivity with the South Island.
