GURUGRAM- Air India (AI), the national carrier of India, has suspended all flights to and from the Middle East, Europe, and the East Coast of North America due to rising tensions in the region. The move affects major routes operating through key hubs like Dubai (DXB), London (LHR), and New York (JFK).

Flights from North America bound for India are either being rerouted or returned to their origin airports, including Newark (EWR) and Toronto (YYZ). The suspension reflects growing aviation disruption amid the ongoing Israel–Iran conflict.

Air India Cancels Multiple Flights

Air India (AI) announced the immediate suspension of several international routes, citing the “developing situation in the Middle East.”

This includes complete halts of services connecting India with high-traffic destinations in the Gulf region, Europe, and North America. Flights already airborne are being either rerouted away from restricted airspaces or turned back, depending on safety evaluations.

The carrier emphasized that the safety of passengers and crew remains its “number one priority.” Passengers are advised to monitor Air India’s official website and social channels for real-time updates before heading to the airport.

The airline has assured that it is in constant contact with security advisors to review operations in real-time.

Etihad Airways and Turkish Airlines were Also Impacted

Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Airways (EY) also confirmed route disruptions on June 23 and 24 due to widespread Middle East airspace closures.

The airline stated that it is maintaining close communication with relevant authorities and will only operate flights deemed safe. Affected passengers are encouraged to check flight status through the airline’s website or contact customer support for travel adjustments.

Meanwhile, Turkish Airlines (TK), headquartered in Istanbul, canceled flights to several Gulf cities including Bahrain (BAH), Dammam (DMM), Doha (DOH), Dubai (DXB), Kuwait (KWI), Abu Dhabi (AUH), and Muscat (MCT) scheduled for June 23, 2025.

The cancellations were announced via social media, with a request for passengers to stay updated through official digital platforms.

The immediate catalyst for these aviation disruptions was a large-scale missile attack by Iran targeting the US-operated Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar. This followed the US military’s strike on three Iranian nuclear facilities on June 22. The attacks have dramatically escalated regional instability, forcing airlines to reevaluate flight paths that traverse affected areas.

Airlines Prioritize Passenger Safety

All airlines involved reiterated their focus on operational safety and regulatory compliance. They assured passengers that flights would only resume through verified safe corridors. Multiple carriers have suspended or rerouted flights through conflict zones, mirroring broader international aviation standards during geopolitical crises.

Affected travelers are advised to:

  • Visit airline websites for updates.
  • Contact customer service or travel agents for changes.
  • Avoid traveling to the airport without confirmed flight information.
