Millions of Polish families face a ghost drastic increases in life costs. All thanks to the fresh EU ETS – ETS2who is to enter into force 2027. Experts are alerting: fuel, heating and energy prices go up, hitting the poorest.
ETS2: A fresh taxation to hit everyone
ETS2 is an extension of the existing Emissions Trading strategy (ETS1), which has so far mainly included large companies. Now the European Union plans to include it Building and transport sectors, which means that households They will feel its effects directly. Fuel suppliers will be forced to buy CO2 allowances and these costs will be passed on to consumers.
According to analysis ING Bank of Silesia, the introduction of ETS2 may consequence in price increases:
- Naphtha E95: o 46 cents per liter
- Diesel: o 54 cents per liter
- Gas: o 90 PLN for MWh (at current tariff PLN 239)
- Coal: o PLN 400 per tonne
These are not tiny increases – this financial blow for all Pole.
Heating bills: Dramatic Forecasts
The study "Analysis of the impact of ETS2 on the cost of surviving of Poles" presents frightening calculations. For the average gas-heating family, the cumulative additional cost of ETS2 between 2027 and 2030 will be PLN 6 338and from 2027 to 2035 24 018 PLN. In the case of coal heating, these costs will scope out accordingly PLN 10 311 and PLN 39,074.
In order to cover these additional expenses, in 2027 the gas heating household will gotta allocate equivalent 45% of the monthly minimum wageand for coal, 73%. In 2030 these values will increase to 82% for gas and 134% for coal. That means that heating costs will absorb a crucial proportion of the household budgetleading to energy poverty.
Government shielding actions: Drops in the sea of needs
In the face of the coming crisis, the Polish government is announcing protective measures. Destination PLN 50 billion within 7 years of Social Climate Fund to mitigate the effects of ETS2. However, experts are skeptical about the effectiveness of these actions. Deputy Minister of Funds and Regional Policy, Jan Szyszko, acknowledges that these measures may be insufficientand the cost of introducing the strategy is disproportionately high for little prosperous countries specified as Poland.
Energy poverty: A real threat to millions
ETS2 will hit the hardest The poorest households. According to the Polish economical Institute, for 20% of the poorest families expenditure on energy, gas and another fuels may increase by 42% by 2035. That means that millions of Poles will face choice: heating or food.
Is there hope?
Experts propose that the government may effort to mitigate the effects of ETS2 through reduced excise work on fuel or promoting biofuels. However, will these actions be adequate to defend Poles from financial disaster? Time will tell, but 1 thing is certain: Difficult times for home budgets are coming.
