Theoretical cognition and a piercing cold practice. Soldiers of the 62nd Light Infantry Battalion in Radom took part in a demanding training in hypothermia, its effects and countermeasures. The training was conducted by instructors of the 10th Świętokrzyska Brigade of Territorial Defence.

In the rotational training cycle, soldiers of the Territorial Defence Army regularly increase their cognition and skills - from cognition of the rules, through issues concerning shooting, green and black tactics, to field medicine. The goal of the “rotation” is to guarantee that the Territorials proceed to make and prepare for crisis situations as best as possible.

Soldiers frequently participate in demanding activities, as well as serving in hard weather conditions, e.g. during winter field training or hours of patrols at the border, so it is crucial that they are prepared to cope with cooling, prevention and effective action in the event of its occurrence.

And in order to grow cognition of hypothermia, applicable training was held, which was attended by soldiers of the 62nd Light Infantry Battalion. The classes took place over the flood in Topornia, Przysdruk, and were conducted by instructors of the School Company of the 10th Świętokrzyska Brigade of Territorial Defence, among them the endurance instructor, the Guinness evidence holder in contact with the cold, Fr Piotr.

During the course, the 62 blp soldiers became acquainted with the principles that form the basis for training in this area – from what hypothermia is, through methods of countering it, to the rules of action in the event of its occurrence.

The added value of the training was applicable activities, during which the soldiers could feel the freezing cold on their own, and besides faced a challenge of helping a individual to cool down. Hypothermia is simply a condition of low body temperature below 35 degrees C. Classes were held in accordance with safety rules, and there was no mention of specified a condition being reached by any of the participants. However, the atmospheric conditions combined with the environment made it possible to realize the seriousness of the situation in the event of a real crisis.

The classes included not only immersion, but besides learning thermoregulation by heating in sleeping bags without an external heat source. The territorials entered the water both without and in uniform. After they were drained, it was the task of the soldiers to light fire with a flint and to improve the ability to rapidly decompose and lay down weapons. Something that is not hard in everyday ministry has become much more hard in a cold relationship.

"During the exercise, we focused on the script of "saving after cold in water". It is essential to act methodically and very gently. The fast and careful transfer of the victim to the sleeping bag and the usage of the NRC blanket are the first steps – this isolation can decide about life - 1 of the participants of the training reports and adds: - These classes are difficult, but besides satisfying, and the ability to gain cognition from qualified instructors is truly a large value and motivation to participate in subsequent rotations.

Rotational training takes place erstwhile a month, and their goal is to increase the deficiency of cognition and capabilities of soldiers. The more demanding the rotation, the better the training of territorials. "I am glad that thanks to cooperation with soldiers of the 10th Świętokrzyska Brigade of Territorial Defence, it was possible to organise specified valuable training. It was demanding, the temperature is low, the water is cold, but just not the theory, and applicable exercises make us absorb cognition better. Soldiers engaged in training, and instructors professionally conducted classes. It was a very fruitful rotation, says Captain Peter, commander of the company participating in the training.
