They practiced navigation utilizing maps, compasses and GPS devices, moving in mountainous terrain, and evacuating injured from hard accessible locations. Soldiers of the 24th Light Infantry Battalion in Kraśnik received intensive training in Bieszczady under the supervision of erstwhile GROM Military Unit soldier and GOPR rescuers.
The mountains are a very demanding area. “They can rapidly verify even the best preparation,” says Captain Marta Gaborek, press officer of the 2nd Lublin Territorial Defence Brigade. Each of the 21 soldiers of the 24th Light Infantry Battalion in Crest (subdivision 2 The Lublin Territorial Defence Brigade) had to deal not only with the route, but above all with its own weaknesses. “This is simply a demanding area, which is why it is simply a natural step in grading training difficulties,” added Captain Gaborek.
Soldiers from Kraśnik in Bieszczady left in mid-November. Under the supervision of an experienced endurance instructor, erstwhile GROM Military Unit operator, they operated in the field for respective days. For hours they trained in dense conditions conditioning marches with load, checking the performance of the body and opposition to effort. They perfected the techniques of overcoming water obstacles utilizing ropes, practicing navigation, planning, camping and evacuation of the victim from hard accessible places. – In the mountains navigation errors can cost wellness and even life. Therefore, we request to train soldiers so that they can operate under all conditions and under pressure," the trainer emphasizes.
The structures of 2 LBOT service respective soldiers with experience in peculiar units (GROM and JWK) and peculiar units of police (ATK). Today, instructors have roles, including line and high-rise training, horse training, tactical training in urbanized areas or just terrain with elements survival. “This truly raises the level of preparation of our soldiers,” states the spokesperson for the Lublin OT brigade. As an example, he points to the spring conflict for the Bronze Mountain Badge, during which the Lublin territorialists were 1 of the most many groups and all qualifications were successfully completed.
The aim of the training in Bieszczady was, among others, to prepare territorialists for search and rescue activities. Therefore, 1 of the key elements of the course was the classes conducted by rescuers of the Bieszczady Mountain Volunteer Rescue Team. Soldiers learned to counter and give first aid in the event of hypothermia, consequence to utmost exhaustion and, above all, safe operation in the mountains.
The Lublin territorials regularly go to the forests, gorges and rivers of Roztocze to take part in trainings during which they execute marches, practice camping and survival. In Bieszczady, they operated for the second time, but not the last. Further training in the mountains is planned at the turn of February and March. – Although we have not yet practiced in the Tatras, we do not exclude specified a direction in the future – adds Captain Marta Gaborek.
