Several twelve changed names
On Sunday, July 5, Google Maps users noted that the names of many celebrated places in Warsaw were changed to offensive or provocative. According to CERT Poland, 78 specified cases were reported by 10 a.m. on Monday. Google has stated that it removes incorrect entries and blocks the accounts liable for adding them.
The magnitude of the incidental proved to be greater than originally due to material published on social media. The changed names included state institutions, museums, memorial sites, parks, buying centers and sports facilities. In many cases there were political terms, vulgar wordings and references to Nazism and crimes of the 3rd Reich.
It is not yet known who is behind these changes or whether all edits have been introduced by 1 individual or group. CERT Poland underlines that it is besides early to find whether there has been a break-in or a coordinated cyber attack. Experts point out that akin cases of humorous or provocative name changes have already occurred before, so analyses are ongoing to explain the nature of the current incident. any of the misnames have already been restored to the right form.
Reaction of the Deputy Digitisation Minister
Dariusz Standerski besides referred to the incident. In an interview with Onet this morning, he said that according to the erstwhile findings it was not a cyber attack or coordinated action.
