Driving a slider is the simplest of possible tests for whether the driver understands whether he is part of an informed community or just a self-absorbed hero of his own queue. In theory, the substance is trivial: erstwhile 2 belts narrow down to one, and motion chokes to the level of the cork, the only effective method is to usage both belts to the end, and then alternate vehicle release — as in a zipper. As of 6 December 2019, this is simply a tough legal work in Poland (Article 22(4)a of the Pord), reminiscent of the D–56 sign. The regulation is simple: you drive in a continuing lane — you let precisely 1 car in from the disappearing lane. And this logical arrangement involves a bullshit tribal culture of stupidity — with full conviction that it knows better. For years before the slider was included in the code, drivers were pushed into their heads to leave the end of the belt early. It made sense at low traffic and advanced speeds, but not with miles of traffic. To this end, a primitive moral intuition from the Peerel meat store came: “Who is politely standing in the tail, is honest, who is missing the line, the smart guy.” As a result, the pathological “culture of the early reunion” became rooted in the minds: I saw a sign — I immediately reflected on the open belt. I feel noble, cultural, and for anyone who passes me by an empty belt, I look with moral superiority as a jerk who makes me look like a balloon. Even if he's driving according to physics and law.
Sociology is simply a textbook example of a toxic false standard. investigation is merciless: contrary to logic, people do not learn what truly reduces their travel time. They learn what tickles their ego and fits the delusions of justice. The driver who pulled over besides early sees that the belt next to him drives faster. But alternatively of admitting, “my strategy is idiotic”, it digs in its besieged fortress: “the planet promotes cunning, but I will endure for my honesty.” It's a classic, powerful cognitive dissonance. erstwhile you have been building your identity for decades on being “order”, admitting that your order is actually a gross sabotage of traffic, it hurts more than being stuck in traffic. And that's why this standard won't die on its own. Most idiots torture those who effort to drive smarter: honking, blocking, driving the road, stigmatizing. And finally, a rational driver, for peace of mind, starts driving like an idiot — just to fit into the pack.
The slider becomes a civilization test. Engineering, hard data and regulations say 1 thing: commute to the end improves safety and shortens congestion. But if most people inactive think of it as smart, then the problem is not deficiency of education. The problem is that people value their own moral well-being more than reason and real benefits to themselves and to the general public. The Slider exposes the truth: a culture of stupidity can last a change of law and access to knowledge, as long as it gives the masses the illusion of being a “good man”. Even if in the name of this delusion time and nerves are stolen from thousands of others.
And precisely the same civilizational aberration we see at urns in democratic elections. The electors, both in explanation and in painful practice, see that the organization they have voiced botched absolutely everything and push for destructive ideology. And yet with a dull stubbornness they vote for her further. Why? due to the fact that they're utilized to it. due to the fact that it was printed in them erstwhile they were young. due to the fact that they built on it their thoughtless, supposedly "moral" conviction of their superiority and right. That is why this festival of stupidity lasts so long and cannot be stopped by any logical argument. For anything to change in this system, the generation that perpetuates this stupidity must simply die out. Only in his place can new, baggage-free, taught from the basics of rational patterns, values and civilizational principles. The culture of stupidity doesn't fade, she can just die out. For anything in Poland to change, unfortunately, we gotta wait for the idiots to die out. So social processes take so long — erstwhile established stupidity cannot be eradicated. I call it social inertia.
