From 2019 to 2021, the authoritarian government of Syria carried out a secret operation to transfer tens of thousands of bodies from the discovered mass grave in Al-Kutajfa to a hidden location in the desert east of Damascus. The intent of the secret burial was to cover up the traces of the crime at the time Bashar Asad attempted to regain global position.
