The agreement on duty-free trade with Ukraine, which was negotiated, is more favourable for Polish farmers. The list of Ukrainian agricultural products (read: junk that does not meet the desired quality standards) subject to quantitative restrictions has been expanded, informs RMF FM station.
According to the information provided by RMF FM, the European Parliament has negotiated the addition of oats to this list, maize, groats and Honey. The European Commission originally proposed that quantitative restrictions be imposed on eggs, poultry and sugar.
In addition, the European Commission has committed itself to taking faster action and response, reducing consequence time from 21 to 14 days, especially in the event of a abrupt increase in Ukrainian wheat imports.
According to the information provided by the portal, the changes were introduced thanks to the amendments by PO MEP Andrzej Halicki, which were adopted by the European Parliament as a full last week. This has caused negotiations with the EU Council and the European Commission.

Work on these changes ended on Wednesday morning, but not all amendments were included in the negotiated agreement. For example, no agreement was reached on the inclusion of 2021, erstwhile imports from Ukraine were at a low level, into the mention period utilized to establish import quotas. The European Commission and any associate States have opposed this thought as this could importantly reduce imports from Ukraine, leading to losses of more than EUR 1 billion per year for the Ukrainian budget. Thus, the mention period was 2022 and 2023. This means that duties will be imposed if imports of these products exceed the average import volume of those 2 years.
According to EU diplomats, a balance has been reached between the request to support Ukraine and knowing the concerns of EU farmers.
The RMF announces that the agreement is to be finalised today. It will most likely enter into force on June 6, 2024 and will be in force for a year.
It is worth noting that present another nationwide protest of farmers began, who have been demonstrating in the largest cities of Poland since this morning. Their protests concern, among others, the EU Green Deal, the import of agri-food products from Ukraine and restrictions on animal breeding in Poland. Farmers besides request a concrete government consequence to the "dramamatic situation" in agriculture. respective tens of thousands of farmers participate in the protests.
