The ban on carrying weapons in Gdańsk. MIA Decision

On 6-7 February 2025, Gdańsk will become the site of an highly crucial political event – a visit of the College of Commissioners of the European Union. In order to guarantee the safety of participants in this event, the Ministry of Interior and Administration (MSWIA) introduces peculiar precautions, including the ban on carrying arms.

Why the ban on carrying weapons?

According to a draft regulation published by the Ministry of abroad Affairs, the ban concerns all kinds of carrying of weapons, both in a loaded and unloaded state. This decision is due to the request to warrant safety during a visit by all EU Commissioners and Polish ministers headed by Prime Minister Donald Tuski.

It was stressed that the introduction of this measurement is simply a consequence to increased hybrid threats from the Russian Federation and Belarus. The justification besides states that the second alert phase of BRRAVO and BRRAVO CRP is presently in force in Poland, which further stresses the importance of the situation.

Top level visit

The visit of the College of Commissioners is 1 of the key events of each EU Presidency. This time, representatives of all 27 associate States will be involved, headed by European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen. Members of the Council of Ministers with the Prime Minister will participate on the Polish side.

The event includes bilateral meetings and various accompanying events. Gdańsk will become the centre of European policy for 2 days, which besides entails additional safety challenges.

Safety in the day of hybrid threats

In the context of global tensions, especially those related to Russia and Belarus, the safety of specified events is peculiarly important. The authorities have decided to introduce a weapons ban as an additional means of protection against possible terrorist or sabotage acts.

The Ministry of abroad Affairs will enter into force on 6 February 2025, which means that for 2 days peculiar restrictions on the possession of weapons in Gdańsk will apply.
