The Geospatial designation and Satellite Services Agency (ARGUS) announced a competition for the choice of name for the satellite constellations of the Armed Forces. This is the first specified task in which ARGUS invites the public – especially young people and space enthusiasts – to co-create the symbolism of Polish presence in orbit.

Poland is developing its satellite capabilities, and 1 of the key elements of this process is the MicroSAR programme. Within its framework, the Armed Forces of Poland have acquired modern radar satellites, which will shortly function as the first Polish constellation of this type. However, before that happens, ARGUS will give them a name that will be selected from the competition applications.

RECLAMA

The competition for the name for the first constellation of radar satellites in the Armed Forces of the Republic of Poland is open and free. It can be attended by adults who are curious in space and satellite technologies, modern safety solutions, the activities of the Armed Forces of Poland and ARGUS, as well as all those who like creative challenges.

To participate in the competition, just prepare the first proposal for the name of the constellation, complete the application form and the required statements, and then send a set of papers to the email address: [email protected]. ARGUS is waiting for applications until January 9, 2026.

As we read in the Rules of Procedure of the competition, erstwhile assessing the proposals of names, the competition committee will take into account in peculiar their originality, their alignment with the nature and specificity of the tasks carried out by ARGUS and the consistency with the communication policy of the Ministry of National Defence. If participants submit identical or very akin names, only the 1 who reached the organizer will be qualified as the first (the time of receiving the email).

Of all applications, the committee will choice 5 final names to be presented on the ARGUS website and on authoritative profiles of agencies on social media. net users will be able to read the proposals and share their opinion in comments, but the competition is not plebiscite and the winning name will be chosen by the committee. The final decision will be made on 16 January 2026.

The author of the winning proposal will be invited to visit the image designation Centre in Białobrzegi and the ARGUS Satellite Operations Centre in Warsaw, where he will have a unique chance to see how modern satellite technologies utilized in Poland's defence strategy work in practice.
Detailed rules of the competition can be found at ARGUS website.

Let us remind you that first Polish radar satellite, acquired under the MicroSAR programme, was launched into orbit on 28 November and started on 2 December imaging. The Polish military plans to have 12 specified satellites in orbit in 2027. – We have already ordered 3 satellites from Iceye, we should shortly get a fourth, and the framework agreement itself concerns six – said Colonel Leszek Paszkowski, Head of the Geospatial designation and Satellite Services Agency. The construction of constellations of Polish satellites is besides a program “POLEOS” and “MicroGlob” which means sending six optoelectronic satellites into orbit. "When all our satellites enter orbit and become operational, we will have any of the top satellite imaging capabilities in Europe. And this is only the beginning, we will definitely want to make this constellation," added Colonel Paszkowski.

SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) means the usage in radar satellites with synthetic apparatus that sends short microwave pulses towards Earth and then connects and processes their reflections, creating detailed images with a resolution of up to 25 cm per pixel. The transmitted image is monochrome due to the fact that SAR satellites do not usage visible light. Thanks to this technology, the military satellite “sees” day and night, through clouds, smoke and fog.
