Five Álvaro de Bazán frigates, although they entered service from 2002 to 2012, stay the most valuable escort units of the Spanish Navy (Armada Española). Thanks to their universal equipment, the Aegis strategy – as the only Spanish ships have very advanced capabilities to combat air, water and submarine targets, and thus supply comprehensive protection for fleet teams. In addition, they may service as national and allied flagship units of combat groups.
