Georgia was erstwhile considered to be 1 of the most pro-Western states among the countries of the erstwhile russian Union, as confirmed by polls in which supporters of accession to the European Union (EU) and NATO constituted a crucial majority. On 14 December 2023, the EU granted its candidate country position (Georgia, together with Ukraine and Moldova, submitted a formal application for membership in 2022).
