New information on the investigation
The prosecution late provided PAP with 2 key information related to the investigation and events that occurred immediately after the Smolensk disaster of April 10, 2010.
According to the first, in early June a translation of the opinion of the global expert team, on which work took almost 5 years, is expected. The second informs about plans to apply for alleged search arrest against more than 40 Russian medical examiners. They are accused of confirming the untruth in the documentation regarding the autopsy of the victims of the crash.
On 25 March, Proc. Krzysztof Schwartz from the National Prosecutor's Office said:
I hope that individual will yet learn from this and I hope that erstwhile this opinion comes to light, we will talk about its substantive content. Then I'd like to have a look at the Smolensk disaster.
This is 1 of the longest investigations.
The investigation conducted by the Polish prosecution on the Smolensk disaster is 1 of the most extended and longest in its history. It was launched on the day of the tragedy by the decision of the then Military territory Prosecutor's Office in Warsaw.
In 2016, on the advice of the then lawyer General, the case was transferred to proceed conducting investigation squad No. 1 operating at the National Prosecutor's Office. Currently, this squad consists of 7 prosecutors, and his work is directed by the previously cited prosecutor Krzysztof Schwartz.
Ceremony of Memory
On April 10, 2010, 96 people died in the Tu-154M plane crash close Smolensk, including president Lech Kaczyński with his wife Maria, the highest-ranking commander of the Polish army and the last president of Poland in exile, Ryszard Kaczorowski. The delegation was going to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Katyn crime. On the 15th anniversary of this tragedy, the celebrations were scheduled to begin on Thursday from the early morning hours.
At 8.20 p.m. at the Warsaw Military Cemetery in Powązki, close the graves of the victims, the relatives of the deceased, parliamentarians, including Speakers of the Sejm and Senate, members of the government – including Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz – as well as president of the capital Rafał Trzaskowski. “We all meet there in a simple, concrete and individual way for me to celebrate the memory of the victims,” said Marshal Simon Holovnia. On behalf of Prime Minister Donald Tusk, the wreath will be submitted by the head of the Chancellery of the Prime Minister, Jan Grabić. On the same morning, president Andrzej Duda will attend the Holy Mass in Wawel Cathedral and will lay a wreath at the sarcophagus of Maria and Lech Kaczyński. His speech for the media was besides planned.
