"Will he destruct everything?" Germany thus summarizes Trump's actions on G7

At the beginning of the G7 summit in Canada, US president Donald Trump lamented Russia's exclusion from a group of leading economical powers, and Europeans insisted on tightening sanctions. The press comments – writes Dagmara Jakubczak in "Deutsche Welle".

"Handelsblatt" emphasises: "Since taking office Trump confronted each of his G7 partners with unprecedented customs war. His conflict for culture against 'wokeness' ('awakening public awareness') moves even to German and French businesses. The president of the United States wants to bring them to an end in favour of minorities. Trump would gladly reinstate Russia's membership of the G7 group, and Canada, host of this year's G7 summit, would include as the 51st state in the US. The president of the United States cannot show in a more powerful way what he thinks of his erstwhile allies. The G7 summit this week will so be a fire test. Despite the 'major destroyer' of the White House, will it be possible to send out a message to the remainder of the planet that the West should be counted? Or will Trump, as at the last gathering in Canada in 2018, spoil the summit?"

"Stuttgarter Zeitung" notes: "Constellation during a summit in Canada is special. Neither organization wants the expression 'G6 plus 1' to become a public description of this meeting. However, there is no uncertainty that six Heads of State and Government – from Germany, France, Italy, Japan, Canada and the United Kingdom – sit together in front of a toolbox. And everyone is afraid that 1 of them, namely U.S. president Donald Trump, will not abruptly appear with a chain saw and will not destruct everything they had previously built together."

"Neue Osnabruecker Zeitung" analyses: "U.S. president sends troops against protestors in his own country, harasssing the justice strategy and universities, and conducting a cultural conflict against all who do not share his views, which is to say they are liberal. Washington gladly reminds Europeans of freedom of speech, but in its country, the Trump administration no longer respects it. Trump does not view multinational fora as a benefit to his country, but as a restriction. The consequence of this attitude is that meetings with the president of the United States are considered a success if there is no scandal on them."

According to the "Free Presse" of Chemnitz, "Merz must play a strong function in the EU and unite its associate States so that Europe becomes a truly independent political origin in the future. This is the historical task of the current generation of rulers in Europe. Either that works, or Merz, Macron, and everyone else will be considered losers in a fight against history. The rule is: Germany will only be able to meet the financial challenges arising from specified a change on a permanent basis if they regain economical strength. Therefore, Merz must guarantee that Trump does not escalate the customs dispute further. In addition, Merz must be as effective outside as in interior policy. Otherwise Germany will make besides small contribution to building fresh global architecture".
